Being a Clerk

We offer clerkships for students who are in their penultimate year of university.

Working under the supervision of a partner, development coach and buddy, the program will enable you to become familiar with the firm and how it operates.

Induction for our clerks incorporate practical, lively and relevant sessions that are conducted by partners, senior associates, solicitors and our in-house experts.

Sessions cover material on King & Wood Mallesons' structure, strategy and culture, our systems and processes and some key skills to assist in managing legal work whilst you are here. Our clerks also get the opportunity to network with their peers as well as graduates/trainees and lawyers in their own and other practices.

For most, the Clerkship Program is the first stage of continuous professional development at King & Wood Mallesons.

Clerks have described King & Wood Mallesons lawyers as "approachable, having a sense of humour, good work ethic, a pleasure to work with, both clients and work colleagues". Others have emphasised the "ability to build strong and enduring relationships, based on trust, getting things right, focused and technically excellent".

We also partner with two career development initiatives:

  • New Colombo Plan – an Australian Government initiative which supports Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships and mentorships in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • CareerTrackers – a national non-profit social enterprise that creates private sector paid internship opportunities for talented Indigenous university students.

To enhance the application process, candidates applying for a clerkship in our Canberra office will be given the opportunity to complete a short task which replicates the work our graduates do each day.

Your response to this short task will be assessed by a revolutionary machine learning technology (called Coeus AI), which will quickly, accurately and objectively identify potential graduate talent.

Find out more about Coeus AI.

This pilot program is an opportunity for Canberra applicants to practice their skills and gain insights and experience in corporate law. The program will run alongside our existing clerkship application system and your outcome in the Coeus AI assessment is just one of many factors KWM looks at when reviewing applications.

For your information, Coeus AI is not linked to the KWM Virtual Experience Program. Coeus AI is for recruitment purposes only.
